Oxybutynin hydrochloride, trade name Ditropan, chemically known as α-cyclohexyl α-hydroxyphenylacetic acid 4-(diethylamino)-2-butynyl ester hydrochloride, was developed and marketed by Marion Pharmaceuticals in 1975 as an anti-smooth muscle spasm drug with anticholinergic effect. It has a strong selective effect on the smooth muscle of urogenital tract. It is characterized by increasing the bladder capacity and the volume of each urination, reducing involuntary bladder contractions and prolonging the interval between urination. The antispasmodic effect is 4-10 times stronger than that of atropine, while the anticholinergic effect is only 1/5 of that of atropine. in addition, it has the characteristics of fast oral absorption, small dosage and high safety. It is used clinically for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) with combined symptoms of urge (urgency) incontinence, urinary urgency and urinary frequency.
